Prime Time Family Reading Time

PRIME TIME family Reading Time in Georgia addresses illiteracy and/or low-literacy using the humanities as a tool to create excitement about reading.

Overview

Combining award-winning children’s books with humanities themes, inspiring storytelling, and open discussion, Prime Time connects literature to the real-world for participating families.

Developed by the Louisana Endowment for the Humanities, this program is carried out in Georgia by the Georgia Public Library Service in partnership with the Georgia Humanities Council.

    • Prime Time is hosted by local libraries once a week for six weeks.
    • Families gather for a meal and participate in a book discussion.
    • Trained storytellers read diverse stories from around the world.
    • University professors lead families in lively discussions based on the texts using humanities themes such as greed, courage, and fairness.
    • Programs are often conducted in Spanish and English.

Impact

Prime Time Family Reading Time:

  • delivers quality humanities education experiences to families at risk for low-literacy.
