The First Black Georgia State Representatives: “Committed to Serve, Expelled Because of Color”

September 3, 2022

Greene County African American Museum’s newest exhibit, “Committed to Serve, Expelled Because of Color,” opens September 3. The exhibit honors the “Original 33″—the first 33 African American members of the Georgia General Assembly. Elected in 1868 during the Reconstruction era, these men were among the country’s first African American state legislators.

Supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities, the exhibit will be on display through December 2022.
