DESCRIPTION:2018 Susie King Taylor Mami Wata Rising International Conference \nThe Susie King Taylor Women’s Institute and Ecology Center is sponsoring a two-day conference on Susie King Taylor and her place in history. Taylor was the first African American to teach openly in a school for former slaves in Georgia. As the author of Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33d United States Colored Troops\, she was the only African American woman to publish a memoir of her wartime experiences. The conference will also explore the Gullah Geechee culture\, of which Taylor was a part. \nMidway First Presbyterian Church\, 672 N. DESCRIPTION:Power to the People: Celebrating 80 Years of Rural Electricity \n \nWitness a reenactment of FDR’s speech on the grounds of Gordon Military College in Barnesville 80 years ago for the dedication of the first rural electric membership cooperative. This event opens an exhibition on rural electrification in Georgia. Special guests include Wayne Clough\, former secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and president emeritus of Georgia Tech\, and Haven Luke\, great-grandson of President Roosevelt. \nThis special event takes place at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium at Gordon State College. \nThe exhibition will be on view at Guillebeau Hall\,  Stafford Avenue\, at Gordon State College\, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. \nFor more information\, call 678-359-5739. \nThis is a community event. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Georgia Archives' 100th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Georgia Archives’ 100th Anniversary \nThe Friends of Georgia Archives and History (FOGAH) will host an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Georgia Archives on Saturday\, August 18\, beginning at 4:30 pm in Morrow. \nThe celebration will begin at the Georgia Archives lobby\, located at 5800 Jonesboro Road\, Morrow at 4:30pm with a reception and a chance to see the current exhibit on Georgia’s earliest land records. Attendees will then move next door to the National Archives at Atlanta\, for a program featuring dinner and special speakers. \nGeorgia governor Nathan Deal will speak at the event\, as will United States Archivist David Ferriero. Other speakers will include Steve Engerrand\, Deputy State Archivist\, and Georgia state senator Valencia Seay. \nAfter its founding in 1918\, the Georgia Archives occupied a small area in the state capitol.  In 1929 it moved to Rhodes Hall on Peachtree Street\, which housed the state’s records until Georgia opened a new Archives and Records Building in 1965.  The Archives moved to its current home in Morrow\, adjacent to the National Archives Atlanta and Clayton State University in 2003. \nAs the repository for official state government records\, the Georgia Archives collects\, provides access\, and preserves the permanently-valuable public records of the State of Georgia.  The Georgia Archives also collects and maintains papers of private citizens and organizations that complement the government records collection and are relevant to Georgia’s history. \nTo learn more about Georgia Archives’ programs\, events\, and collections\, visit the Archives website: www.georgiaarchives.org. \nTickets are $60 and may be purchased from FOGAH’s website. \nThis is a community event.
