SUMMARY:Spring Place & Oochgeelogy: Moravian Missions Among the Cherokee
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Wanda Patterson\, “Spring Place & Oochgeelogy” tells the dramatic story of the Moravians\, the first missionary group to be permitted to establish schools and mission stations in the Cherokee Nation. The lecture will focus on the origins and development of Moravian missionary activity in the Cherokee Nation\, highlighting the patterns of cross-cultural exchange between Moravian missionaries and the Cherokee at the Spring Place and Oochgeelogy mission stations in present-day Chatsworth and Calhoun\, Georgia. \nWanda Patterson is a charter member of the Georgia Trail of Tears Association. On behalf of the chapter\, she edited a volume of poetry by Cherokee writer John Rollin Ridge\, and she serves on the Trail of Tears Speakers Staff. \nThis program is supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities.

DESCRIPTION:The Funk Heritage Center opens a new temporary exhibit\, We Neighbors Would Meet Together\, interpreting the history and influence of the Oothcaloga Moravian Mission (near present-day Calhoun) on Cherokee integration\, nationalism\, and sovereignty in the nineteenth century. The exhibit is also designed to raise public awareness and generate support for the Oothcaloga Mission God’s Acre and Stephens-Morrow Family Cemetery Preservation Project-a major historic preservation project of a vulnerable Trail of Tears site. \nThis program is supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities.

SUMMARY:"So They Might Be Known" Exhibit Opening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Since Hay House opened as a museum in 1964\, there has been research done but no interpretation of the lives of African Americans who worked at the house from the time of enslavement through the Civil Rights movement. The exhibit titled\, “So They Might Be Known\,” will tell their stories and fill a much-needed gap in the House’s narrative and what is shared with visitors\, preservationists\, school groups\, and more. The exhibit will provide a more inclusive and complete history of Hay House. An opening reception will be held and coincide with one of our biannual Hay Days\, a free event open to the public twice a year. The opening will also feature a panel discussion on urban slavery in Macon  with scholars Dr. Rachanice Candy Tate and Mrs. Muriel M. Jackson. Once installed\, “So They Might Be Known” will be on display indefinitely. \nThis program is supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities.

SUMMARY:Reading and Discussion of "Queen Bess"
DESCRIPTION:Join Théâtre du Rêve for a workshop presentation of Queen Bess: A Bessie Coleman Story\, a new play by Amina S. McIntyre commissioned in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Coleman’s death (April 30\, 2026). Bessie Coleman lived in the early 1900s as a mixed-race Black and Native American woman. Due to Jim Crow restrictions and gender discrimination in the U.S.\, she earned her pilot’s license (the first ever earned by a Black woman or a Native American\, and the first international license earned by any American) by teaching herself French and then traveling to France to study. More than 100 years later\, her resourcefulness and accomplishments tell a story that continues to challenge and inspire. \nThis program is supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities. \n  \n
