SUMMARY:Film: "Common Good Atlanta: Breaking Down the Walls of Mass Incarceration"
DESCRIPTION:In 2008\, Sarah Higinbotham\, a Ph.D. student at Georgia State University\, wanted to teach a literature class in a Georgia prison\, but discovered that no college programs existed in Georgia prisons\, so she started one. This documentary by Atlanta filmmaker Hal Jacobs looks at the impact of the program on students and instructors. Incarcerated students find an intellectual freedom that encourages growth and dignity\, while instructors find a stimulating and transformative environment for the liberal arts. 2022\, 58 minutes. \nThe film screening will be followed by a panel discussion including Jacobs; Bill Taft\, academic director of Common Good Atlanta; and Common Good alumni and instructors.

DESCRIPTION:North Georgia has a rich history of Native American culture\, which has had a lasting impact on the historical and ecological development of the area. Presented by FIND Outdoors\, Dr. Joe Candillo will explore this rich history in his presentation “The Reality of Native American Ceremony & Spirituality.”  \nJoe Candillo is a tribally enrolled citizen of the Pascua Yaqui Indian Tribe of Arizona (Federally recognized tribe). He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies with a concentration in Indigenous Studies\, an MA in American Indian Studies\, and an undergraduate degree in Anthropology. Dr. Candillo’s research background focuses on Native American spirituality\, aboriginal North American environmental adaptation\, and material culture traditions.  \nThis presentation will take place indoors in the Brasstown Bald Mountain Top Theatre. Joe will be showcasing Native American spirituality through discussion and demonstration\, as well as tools\, art\, and clothing Joe has made himself.  The event is free to attend but seating is limited.  \nThis program is supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities.

DESCRIPTION:Greene County African American Museum’s newest exhibit\, “Committed to Serve\, Expelled Because of Color\,” opens September 3. The exhibit honors the “Original 33″—the first 33 African American members of the Georgia General Assembly. Elected in 1868 during the Reconstruction era\, these men were among the country’s first African American state legislators. \nSupported by a grant from Georgia Humanities\, the exhibit will be on display through December 2022.

SUMMARY:The Southeastern Woodlands Tribes with Dr. Joe Candillo: Native American Ecology
DESCRIPTION:North Georgia has a rich history of Native American culture\, which has had a lasting impact on the historical and ecological development of the area. Presented by FIND Outdoors\, Dr. Joe Candillo will explore this rich history in his presentation “The Importance of Land and the Living Natural Environment to Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.” \nJoe Candillo is a tribally enrolled citizen of the Pascua Yaqui Indian Tribe of Arizona. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies with a concentration in Indigenous Studies\, and his research background focuses on Native American spirituality\, aboriginal North American environmental adaptation\, and material culture traditions.  \nDr. Candillo’s presentation will visit a number of modern Western philosophies associated with the understanding and management of land and compare/contrast these philosophies with how Indigenous peoples traditionally understood the natural living world.  \nThis presentation will take place at the Anna Ruby Falls Picnic Area. The event is free to attend\, but registration is encouraged.  \nThis program is supported by a grant from Georgia Humanities.
