DESCRIPTION:2018 Susie King Taylor Mami Wata Rising International Conference \nThe Susie King Taylor Women’s Institute and Ecology Center is sponsoring a two-day conference on Susie King Taylor and her place in history. Taylor was the first African American to teach openly in a school for former slaves in Georgia. As the author of Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33d United States Colored Troops\, she was the only African American woman to publish a memoir of her wartime experiences. The conference will also explore the Gullah Geechee culture\, of which Taylor was a part. \nMidway First Presbyterian Church\, 672 N.
