ASO and Georgia Council for the Arts Join New Harmonies

The Georgia Humanities Council (GHC) is pleased to have the support of two of Georgia’s premier arts organizations in bringing the New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music Smithsonian traveling exhibition to the state.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has signed on as the lead musical presenting partner for the exhibition, offering its time, talent, and additional resources to help make the tour a success. The orchestra's partnership with the GHC is the first of its kind in the nation to support New Harmonies.

The Georgia Council for the Arts, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, has also signed on as a presenting partner for the tour. Through enhanced marketing, outreach, and programming, the Georgia Council for the Arts will help the GHC inform Georgia's residents and many of its visitors about the state’s distinct contribution to American roots music.

New Harmonies is a Smithsonian Institution exhibition that explores the early traditions of American music. Many of these traditions influence much of what we hear on the radio today. This two-year tour, which begins on April 14, 2012, and ends on November 26, 2013, will celebrate Georgia’s roots music traditions.

GHC looks forward to the creative energy, expertise, and connections that these dynamic organizations will bring to the project.

New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music has been made possible in Georgia by the Georgia Humanities Council in partnership with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Center for Public History at the University of West Georgia, Georgia Council for the Arts, and Georgia Department of Economic Development.

New Harmonies is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities councils nationwide. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the U.S. Congress.
