NGE Award Given at Social Studies Fair

The fair was held March 20, 2010 at Duchtown High School in Hampton. Criteria for the award were that the project (1) explore a question or concept with a clear relationship to the state of Georgia; and (2) make innovative use of the NGE as a secondary source.

The winner was Whitney Cruz, an eighth-grader at North Whitfield Middle School in Dalton. She used the NGE article "Seminole Wars" to answer her research question "Indian Removal Act: Did Andrew Jackson Have a Choice?" Miss Cruz concluded that Jackson did, in fact, make a conscious choice to defy the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Worcester v. Georgia (1932), and she traced this decision to his experiences decades earlier in removing Seminole Indians from Georgia and Florida.

Her teacher was Mr. Andrew Bragg.

Miss Cruz received a certificate and monetary gift, donated by the Georgia Humanities Council.
