Governor's Awards 2011
The 26th Governor's Awards in the Humanities luncheon took place Thursday, October 6, 2011, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Old Georgia Railroad Depot in downtown Atlanta.
Twelve local community members received Governor's Awards in the Humanities medallions in recognition of their impact on Georgia's communities through history, literature, ideas, and culture.
The 26th Governor's Awards in the Humanities recipients are:- David Bottoms, Marietta
- Judith Ortiz Cofer, Louisville and Athens
- Doris A. Derby, Atlanta
- John Wesley Jacobs, Gainesville
- Ethelene Dyer Jones, Milledgeville and Blue Ridge
- Gwen Hutcheson, Athens
- Christine Lambert, Madison
- Lela Phillips, Albany
- Clayton M. Shotwell, Augusta
- Annette Wise, Plains
- Georgia Women of Achievement, Macon
- Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, Athens
Over three hundred cultural and educational leaders from across the state joined together to celebrate the humanities and the achievements of these recipients.
Governor Nathan Deal (via recording), Secretary of State Brian Kemp, and Senator George Hooks each took part in the ceremony. Members of the Georgia Crackers, the Peachtree Strutters, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra served as guest musicians.
The event kicked off with the Annual Humanities Lecture, delivered by Dr. Stanley Romanstein, president of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. View an excerpt of Dr. Romanstein's lecture.
