Nominate a Humanities Hero

Who's your local humanities hero? Do you know of a person or organization that has greatly impacted your community or our state through work in public humanities education? If so, nominate him, her or them to receive a Governor's Award in the Humanities.

Qualifications

Think about those master teachers who enrich learning experiences within and outside of the classroom; or the volunteers or staff for cultural organizations who research and present important stories and who keep the doors of institutions open. Every community has in its midst these heroes, who enrich civic life at the local level, through their recognition of the importance of the humanities in our lives. They are the "friends of the library" who always attend and organize reading programs. They are those who research and develop exhibits on local history or other cultures or those who work in their communities to preserve local landmarks.

These heroes see the connection between the past and future of their neighborhoods and communities. By their examples, they help us to recognize the importance of the humanities in all our lives.

Process of Nomination

Submit a letter detailing the nominee's significant contributions to building community, character, and citizenship in our state through humanities education. Be sure to include the name, address, and phone number of the nominee, as well as your name, address, and phone number. Competitive nominations are usually accompanied by at least two additional letters of nomination offering further information and an enlarged perspective regarding the nominee. The nominations deadline for the 2009 Governor's Awards in the Humanities will be announced in late summer 2008.
