Georgia Humanities Council Grant Program

The Georgia Humanities Council Grant Program provides financial support for cultural and humanities-based educational programs that strengthen local communities by providing opportunities for learning and discussion among all participants. Grants are awarded to such nonprofit organizations as museums, libraries, historical societies, community groups, educational institutions and government agencies.

All projects funded by the GHC must have a humanities focus. The humanities are those branches of knowledge, including philosophy, literature, history, language, folklife, philosophy, comparative religion, ethics, art criticism and theory all concerned with human thought and culture; the liberal arts. Projects must also involve a humanities scholar and be open to the public.

For 2010-2013 the GHC presents two new grant opportunities, the Program Support Grant and the Partnership Grant:

Program Support Grants

This category is most appropriate for single or short-term public programs. Examples include speakers, traveling exhibits, book or film discussions, or interpretive programs at historic sites.

Maximum Available: $2,000

Deadlines: Postmarked by the first working day of February, May and September

Funding decisions require 60 days, so programs can not begin sooner than 90 days after the date on which the application is submitted.

GHC staff will review drafts, provided that they are submitted by the 10th day of the month prior to the deadline. Send to: awilliams@georgiahumanities.org

Partnership Grants

Through this grant category, GHC will provide funds for organizations to offer a series of cultural and humanities-based educational activities in communities to increase heritage tourism and promote economic development in Georgia. The GHC will fund one grant in each of the nine Georgia Department of Economic Development Tourism Regions. To determine the tourism region location for your organization please consult the map at the end of this packet.

Besides providing funding, GHC will offer technical assistance, training and networking opportunities for the organizations receiving Partnership Grants, in order to strengthen their capacity to present successful humanities programs and tourism activities.  There will be a one-day, mandatory meeting of Partnership Grant project directors. The meeting date and place will be announced after the grants are awarded.

Funding up to $10,000 is available for a series of activities that will take place between the dates July 1-June 30.  At the end of the first year, organizations will be eligible for a second year of renewed funding, provided that they have made progress on their programs and are in compliance with GHC reporting requirements.

Example of programs most appropriate for this category include community festivals with multiple humanities components, exhibits and accompanying programs, local history interpretative series, extended reading/discussion series, or oral history projects that involve collection and sharing of stories.

It is GHC’s intention to award at least one Partnership Grant in each of the nine Georgia Department of Economic Development-Tourism Regions. Map included with Partnership Grant Application Coversheet.
