The theme for the 2012 Georgia Council of Teachers of English annual meeting is "Read, Write, and Reflect: the Teaching Life".  To highlight some of the ways in which autobiographies and memoirs provide insights for understanding the southern experience, John Inscoe will speak.

For the past two decades Inscoe has incorporated the study of memoirs and autobiographies into his own teaching, and the book provides a bibliography of suggestions that will engage those who are reading for pedagogy or pleasure.

The keynote is based, in part, on his recent publication Writing the South through the Self: Explorations in Southern Autobiography (co-published by the University of Georgia Press and the Georgia Humanities Council).  Copies of the book will be available for signing.

John C. Inscoe is the Albert B. Saye Professor of History and University Professor at the University of Georgia. He also is the editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia. To give back to his profession, he also serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Historical Association.
