The film selected for this "screen and discuss" session is “Imitation of Life” filmed in 1959 starring Lana Turner, Sandra Dee, Robert Alda, Juanita Moore, and John Gavin. In this film, a young girl struggles with her racial identity and relationship with her mother.
After an uninterrupted viewing of the film, participants engage in a 30-minute open discussion regarding the societal correlations and implications of the movie’s storylines, characters, imagery, and dialog.
Moderators include:
- Dr. Dawn Herd-Clark, Associate Professor of History, Fort Valley State University;
- Dr. Preston Martin, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Fort Valley State University; and
- Dr. Diane Byrd, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Fort Valley State University.
