Lakeside High School takes top honors
On December 10, 2010, teams of high school students gathered at the State Capitol for the We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution state competition. Having studied and researched six units of material related to the history and the principles of the United States Constitution, they shared their knowledge with panels of experts in simulated Congressional hearings.
At the end of the day, the team from Lakeside High School in DeKalb County scored the highest average overall and won the right to represent Georgia at the national finals in Washington DC, April 29-May 2, 2011. The team’s teacher is Richard Barbe, and the class consists of 29 sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Congratulations also go to the team from Chamblee Charter High School, for receiving five awards for excellence on individual units throughout the day. The teacher of this class is Stephen Rubino, and his class contains 18 seniors.
A team from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, presented two units as a demonstration group. The teacher of this class is Marsha James.
The We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution program in Georgia is sponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council, in partnership with the Center for Civic Education funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the Education for Democracy Act approved by the United States Congress.
