2011 Freedom Riders Come to Morehouse

A new generation of Freedom Riders will arrive in Atlanta on May 11 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Freedom Rides. PBS selected 40 college students from approximately 700 applicants to participate in the ride, which begins in Washington, D.C., and ends in New Orleans, following the same route as the one taken in 1961.

While in Atlanta, these students from across the nation will join area leaders to discuss the Freedom Rides and civic engagement.

  • Participants will attend a screening of the new award-winning PBS documentary Freedom Riders followed by a keynote by Dr. Ray Arsenault, historian and author of the book Freedom Riders, upon which the movie is based.
  • After lunch, participants will take part in a dialogue concerning the rides and civic engagement, as well as the state of civic engagement in Atlanta.
  • Original riders Julia Aaron, Bernard Lafayette, Jr., and C. T. Vivian will join in these conversations.
The event is hosted by:
the Anti-Defamation League, Atlanta Office of the American Jewish Committee, Atlanta Regional Commission, Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education, Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History , Civic League for Regional Atlanta, Collective Deliberation, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Emory University Center for Ethics, Georgia Humanities Council, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Georgia State University, Morehouse College - Rabin King Initiative and Martin Luther King Jr. Collection.
