Civil War to Civil Rights

At the heart of the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement are questions concerning race, rights and responsibilities, and what it means to be an American. Since 2009, the Georgia Humanities Council has supported several programs to explore these questions.

Current Initiatives

This series of book discussions is taking place at libraries across Georgia during 2012. "Let's Talk About It" is supported by funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities "We the People" initiative.

An edited volume of original articles from the New Georgia Encyclopedia provides a comprehensive introduction to Georgia's role in the Civil War and examines how the Civil War impacted the state.

Co-published with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, this travel guide to the Civil War in Georgia covers historic sites, museums, trails and markers connected to Georgia role in the Civil War.

Written by Dr. John Inscoe and published in partnership with the University of Georgia Press, this book explores race, gender, family, and class through southern autobiography.

Get Involved!

The Georgia Humanities Council invites other communities and cultural organizations to consider our nation's "unfinished work". The model we use incorporates a humanities-based text, film, or presentation to begin conversation.  We also sometimes include facilitators to help moderate dialogue. This process can make potentially difficult conversations more comfortable. Interested communities/organizations may apply for GHC Grants of up to $2,000 to help support these types of programs.
