  • Join us for the 23rd Governor's Awards in the Humanities, Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Old Georgia Railroad Depot in downtown Atlanta. The Annual Humanities Lecture kicks off this event, and will be delivered this year by Mr. John T. Edge of the Southern Foodways Alliance. Immediately following the lecture, the Awards Luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. Governor Sonny Perdue will present medallions at this luncheon to the 2008 award recipients for their work in humanities education for Georgia's public.   • Make an online gift to the Georgia Humanities Council. A gift of $25 or more could support a student's participation in National History Day, a teacher's attendance at an upcoming summer teacher workshop or a grant writing workshop in a rural Georgia community. Click here to donate online .

  • Volunteers needed through May 18th for Atlanta History Center Tradition Innovation exhibition . Volunteer are needed to serve as docents for the new Tradition/Innovation exhibit featuring American Masterpieces of Southern Craft and Traditional Art. The exhibit displays more than 130 works by 58 master traditional and contemporary craft artists. Volunteers are needed for 2-3 hour shifts Monday through Sunday.   • The Lovett School offers 2008 American Studies Summer Workshop for Teachers. From June 12-13, 2008, the American Studies Institute of the Lovett School in Atlanta offers "From Cold War to Strangelove: Examining Communism in America through Politics and Culture, 1940-1960". Participants learn about television, toys, fashion, music art and literature of the Cold War Era. This workshop is open to secondary school teachers and graduate students interested in teaching their students about America from an interdisciplinary perspective.   • The National Endowment for the Humanities offers fellowships for Italian Cultural Heritage Research and Preservation Assistance Grants . There are several deadlines in July. The Italian Cultural Heritage Research Fellowships and Preservation Assistance Grant applications are due May 15, 2008. During July Applications will be accepted for Humanities High Performance Computing Programs, Preservation and Access: Education and Training grants and Humanities Collections and Resources grants and for Small Grants to Libraries: Soul of a People: Voices from the Writers Project.
