Mission Statement

The mission of the Georgia Humanities Council is to build community, character, and citizenship through humanities education.

Core Values

The Georgia Humanities Council seeks to:

Promote understanding and awareness of diverse values, experiences, traditions and cultures—particularly of Georgia’s people, past and present.
Encourage and support humanities-based civic education

The humanities explore ideas, literature, traditions, and history-aspects of our lives that enrich us, guide our actions, and foster human dignity. By educating us about the histories and perspectives of others, the humanities further mutual understanding and respect. The humanities infuse in us a sense of time and place; they illuminate the sacrifices and achievements of others who came before us.

Because they enlighten us about the universal struggles and accomplishments of humankind, the humanities are a vital source of inspiration in the creation of informed citizens, capable of living out the principles upon which our nation is founded.

Goals (2004-2007)

Goal: Promote awareness of diverse values, experiences, traditions and cultures- particularly of Georgia's people, past and present.

Implementation: Sponsor and promote programs that celebrate the rich cultural traditions and the mosaic that are part of Georgia's population
Implementation: Sponsor and promote programs that consider values-based issues and/or character education.
Implementation: Further develop ongoing programs on history and culture that involve students as well as the general public.
Implementation: Collaborate with other organizations on projects that highlight Georgia's history, values, traditions, and culture.

Goal: Encourage and support civic education in the humanities

Implementation: Sponsor and promote programs that focus on humanities-based elements of community and civic issues.
Implementation: Further develop annual programs that highlight the relevance of the humanities to leadership.

Administrative Goal: Ensure effective discharge of the organization's objectives

Implementation: Develop effective communication, networking, public relations and advocacy strategies
Implementation: Strive to increase donor base
Implementation: Partner with the community foundations to increase the reach and effectiveness of humanities based programs
Implementation: Work closely with the N.E.H. in the areas of compliance, assessment, financial reporting and new member orientation
Implementation: Work to increase state funding for the humanities
Implementation: Maintain the staff and facilities necessary for efficient operation
Implementation: Maintain a Board of Directors membership that includes representation from the humanities and other professions and that reflects the people of Georgia in terms of geographic, age, and ethnic diversity
